New Beyond The Mist Artwork and Sci Phi Issue 7 News!

Using my Evil McPersuadey patented Ultrasonic Mind-Control Ray and Ear Cleaner, I have convinced the ever awesome Cat Leonard to produce not one, but four new illustrations to accompany new instalments of Beyond the Mist in Sci Phi Journal. Here is the first illustration, that my wife immediately said she wanted on a T-shirt of her own:

The final proofreading phase of Issue 7 is now underway, and all should be ready in time for the issue’s release before the end of the month. In related news, as of Issue 7 I will be also listed as one of the editors, so can now proudly refer to myself as a contributing editor of Sci Phi Journal. Sounds good, doesn’t it?

Beyond the Mist First Draft Complete, Future Plans, and Beta Reader Request!

I am happy to announce that I’ve just written the ending of Beyond the Mist, aka book 1 in the Chara Series. There are a couple of gaps to fill in and and some inconsistencies to iron out, (and most likely cuts to make), but this is an important milestone, completion of the first draft. The next two books are both at the initial rough outline stage, and may grow into two parallel series set in the same universe that converge into one, we’ll see how work on those progresses as I finalise the remaining instalments for Sci Phi Journal. Both stories will grow out of things mentioned in chapter 12, so I will give more details on those once Issue 7 is out at the end of this month.

So far I have been writing Beyond the Mist without any beta readers, the first person to see each instalment has been Jason Rennie, Sci Phi Journal’s chief editor. I realise this is not the optimal solution, though it happens to have been working so far, so I’d like to ask for people to beta read and critique future instalments before I submit them, to help keep the quality up once the story world opens up. Beta reading will also commence after Issue 7 is out, and you will need to have been following the story so far to take part in that.

Sci Phi Issue 7 Teaser and SuperversiveSF Rountable!

SciPhiJournal_Issue7_Cover

The above teaser of the cover art for issue 7 has been released, the signed copies of Nobility Among Us and Selected Verse: Faith and Family for the contest winner have been posted, and I have also submitted my first article to Sci Phi Journal, based on one of the lesser-read blog posts here. We’ll see if it gets accepted, and if so in which issue it will appear.

Issue 7 of Sci Phi Journal will contain chapters 12 and 13 of Beyond the Mist, in which the main character’s new name will be revealed (along with a lot of other things)

Also, tomorrow at 3pm Eastern time there will be another superversiveSF live stream, in which we will be discussing the merits of the various Hugo-nominated works, the day after voting on the awards closes. Many of these works can be read for free, links can be found at SFsignal:

Beyond the Mist Naming Contest Winner!

SciPhi2The contest deadline expired 12 days ago, the winning name has been selected and incorporated into future installments (influencing what goes on in those instalments in various ways), and the winner, Joanne G. Watson, has been contacted so that the first of her prizes can be sent her way this week. Congratulations and thank you to Joanne, for the excellent name for Beyond the Mist’s protagonist. That name will be revealed in the next issue of Sci Phi Journal, due to come out in about a month from now.

Book View Café mentions the Naming Contest (as something they would never do)

Brenda W. Clough over at Book View Café makes mention of the Beyond the Mist naming contest (although she links to the announcement at SuperversiveSF rather than here), and has this to say about it:

I would never in a thousand years do this. A contest to name the protagonist? A character with whom I am going to be spending the next year of my mental life, whose every dream, digestive upset, sexual encounter and trauma from birth to grave I am going to invent out of whole cloth? I would never hand over such power to anyone; I shall reign like Alexander, and I shall reign alone.

You can’t pick the name for your hero off a list.

She is right, of course. I would never normally surrender control of such a pivotal character-molding parameter and guard my creations with absolute care. So what has happened to my sanity in this case? My response:

Before anyone asks, nobody else suggested to me that I do this, I have been planning it for more than six months and first suggested the idea to the editor of the journal three months ago. He gave the go-ahead, and here we are.

It is a risk, and I wouldn’t do it for any other venue, but I have faith in the intelligence of Sci Phi Journal‘s readership (a journal dedicated to philosophy and science fiction is going to attract intelligent readers). My faith seems to be justified- I had a placeholder name in mind, but the very first (and currently winning) entry suggested a name that I would happily use instead.

I expect most of the entries will come in after Issue 6 is out, and if someone can come up with something better, great.

I look forward to reading what else Sci Phi Journal’s fine readership can come up with. Don’t disappoint me!
