A decorative pitch for Nobility Among Us in verse:

A Flock of Fools
Here lies in wait a flock of fools
All keen and primed to mock and sneer
At all that they don’t understand,
And all that hints at what they fear.
Let not their snickers blind you to
The bankruptcy of their worldview.
All they pretend to hold as true
Is carnal lusts they ballyhoo.
Though your life has proved them wrong
They write another goading song;
Layabouts they see as wise,
Hard workers chumps in their own eyes. Continue reading
Without love there is no life
I thought up this song when I first wrote the prologue scene between Marcus and Sylvia, minus the spoken introduction, with the music beginning when Marcus slowly opens the door. It sounds amazing in my head, but I don’t have the musical talent to make it a reality, maybe one day. Continue reading
Wisdom
Heavy steps that trudge across the unforgiving ground,
Wading through a cloud of curiosities.
Missing the eternal all around,
Distracted by the screams of urgent vanities.
A moment to reflect upon the rock on which we stand;
Covered with an earthen layer, but solid nonetheless;
Like a mighty and uncompromising great paternal hand
That offers its support in times of stress.
What will dissipate the mist and enable us to see
The glory and the constancy of truth?
Will we listen to that message, or mock with childish glee
That its courier is brazen or uncouth? Continue reading
Can you?
I tried reciting some of my poems to get into character for an audition last week (the first audition I’ve ever attempted in my life), and ended up writing a new poem. Here it is:
Can you?
Can you take a man from heaven,
Throw him down to earth,
And expect him to be grateful
For a squalid pauper’s birth?
Can you take the Son of Glory,
Mar and smear his face,
And expect him still to treasure
Our decrepit human race? Continue reading
A Dozen Anniversaries
After that flurry of activity this week, let’s calm things down with the anniversary poem that I promised:
A Dozen Anniversaries
A dozen anniversaries
A dozen raucous cheers;
A near half-dozen nurseries
We’ve needed through the years.
How rich has now our life become,
With two souls side by side?
We are now far more than our sum
Now our old selves have died. Continue reading
Drums
This is a ‘call to battle’ poem given towards the end of Nobility Among Us, it is recited with drum accompaniment at the end of a speech to the defenders of Draishire Castle. The castle is about to be assaulted with tanks, jets, helicopters and modern ground troops, which the defending side also has, but in vastly fewer numbers. The poem itself is from a much earlier age, when such technology did not exist.
Drums
Hear the approach of the marching drums.
With each beat, the enemy is closer;
With each beat, your pulses rise.
With each beat, our men are more united;
With each beat, focus fiery eyes.
With each beat, our forces are advancing;
With each beat, no more room for fear.
With each beat, our targets become clearer;
With each beat, the time for war is here.
With each beat, with each beat, with each beat…
They stop.
Now is the calm before the storm, the last breath of silence before the roar of battle begins.
Every man is straining at the leash, watching, waiting, for the fateful order to be given.
Here it comes…
Loving Mother
So, I wrote something nice for my wife’s birthday, then looked at it again and decided it’s much more of an anniversary celebration than a birthday poem, so I’ll save it for then (next week).
This is what I cobbled together for her birthday:
Loving Mother
Loving mother, faithful friend,
Wife beloved without end;
Another year we have been blessed
To know you and we’ll do our best
To make you smile and let you know
That all your efforts here below
Are valued up on high and here;
Please stay with us another year,
So we can give you love and cheer
And show you, our sweet Mummy dear,
How much you mean to all of us,
And to the One that we all trust. Continue reading
What Makes a Man a Noble?
Alright, I’m back from my trip, and since the publication of Nobility Among Us is drawing near, I thought it was about time to share this poem with you all; the first two stanzas are quoted at the start of the book. I will be posting further updates and a sample chapter or two over the next few weeks.
What Makes a Man a Noble?
“What makes a man a noble?
What sets a soul apart?
Is it breeding or upbringing
Or the depth of his own heart?
“What forms a mind of greatness
That triumphs through its toil?
Whose memory will not be lost
When buried in the soil?” Continue reading
Water
I’ll be away for three weeks in a few days’ time, so it may be a while until my next post.
Water
Shimmering glassy sheets and columns
Sweeping, swirling flows and waves
Gentle chattering streams and bubbles
Mighty roaring foams and sprays
Calming mists and cleansing rain
Warm mountain springs that soothe your pain
Refreshing and invigorating
Healing and rejuvenating
Enriching and new-life-giving
The miracle for all.
