Anthem

Could chance alone have led me here to witness this magnificence
Or else the instigation of some great eternal plan?
I’ll respond with all the fullness of my youth’s profound exuberance
To answer nature’s call and thus attempt to be a man!

What fortitude arises when your path is strewn with obstacles,
As if they were all placed there by a teacher from on high;
It will not do to merely gaze at them with tinted spectacles,
For duty bids us not just rise but reach up to the sky! Continue reading

Shimmering Shadows

This is an unfinished poem I wrote for a Dungeons and dragons campaign that I partially planned but was never played (the campaign was planned to fit the poem, and then they both fed off each other) There are other parts to it, but they aren’t complete and spoil some of the twists. This summarises the first phase of the campaign.

Shimmering Shadows

The regal dawn, the pauper’s crown,
The sun-drenched trumpeter of great renown,
Rouses the land with a soundless roar,
“The darkness is over now, awake once more!” Continue reading

A Flock of Fools

Here lies in wait a flock of fools
All keen and primed to mock and sneer
At all that they don’t understand,
And all that hints at what they fear.

Let not their snickers blind you to
The bankruptcy of their worldview.
All they pretend to hold as true
Is carnal lusts they ballyhoo.

Though your life has proved them wrong
They write another goading song;
Layabouts they see as wise,
Hard workers chumps in their own eyes. Continue reading

Wisdom

Heavy steps that trudge across the unforgiving ground,
Wading through a cloud of curiosities.
Missing the eternal all around,
Distracted by the screams of urgent vanities.

A moment to reflect upon the rock on which we stand;
Covered with an earthen layer, but solid nonetheless;
Like a mighty and uncompromising great paternal hand
That offers its support in times of stress.

What will dissipate the mist and enable us to see
The glory and the constancy of truth?
Will we listen to that message, or mock with childish glee
That its courier is brazen or uncouth? Continue reading

Can you?

I tried reciting some of my poems to get into character for an audition last week (the first audition I’ve ever attempted in my life), and ended up writing a new poem. Here it is:

Can you?

Can you take a man from heaven,
Throw him down to earth,
And expect him to be grateful
For a squalid pauper’s birth?

Can you take the Son of Glory,
Mar and smear his face,
And expect him still to treasure
Our decrepit human race? Continue reading

A Dozen Anniversaries

After that flurry of activity this week, let’s calm things down with the anniversary poem that I promised:

A Dozen Anniversaries

A dozen anniversaries
A dozen raucous cheers;
A near half-dozen nurseries
We’ve needed through the years.

How rich has now our life become,
With two souls side by side?
We are now far more than our sum
Now our old selves have died. Continue reading

Nobility Among Us Youtube Video Contest

I am currently in the final stages of self-publishing Nobility Among Us. The final book cover, internal artwork and manuscript have been approved, and are currently being processed by the printer, after which I will obtain a single copy for final approval before it goes on general sale (most likely in about a month).

Going the self-publishing route means doing all of my own marketing, and my funds are extremely limited. I have an idea for promoting the book via youtube video, but I don’t have the skills or tools to produce something of sufficient quality, I am especially interested in high-quality audio.

So, I would like to announce a youtube video creation contest, with a small cash prize, the overall prize fund being 60 US dollars plus two free copies of the book, the winning videos being used to promote the book. Continue reading
