Issue 8’s Cat Leonard Artwork for Beyond the Mist!

Issue 8 of Sci Phi Journal, which will be the last issue of the journal in its current format, will feature chapters 14 and 15 of Beyond the Mist. The last two installments will continue in the new sustainable format, which will mean I’ll start get paid for the editing work I’ve been doing on the journal as well as for my contributions, though the initial rates may be lower until subscriptions pick up, details on the new setup can be found here.

Cat Leonard’s second illustration, depicting the protagonist’s first look at the wilderness valley as he emerges from the trees, will appear in Issue 8, and looks like this:

The other two illustrations will be done, and will appear in the final standalone publication of Beyond the Mist, which will be available both in ebook and paperback form after the last two installments have been made available to Sci Phi Journal subscribers in due course.

More reviewer praise for Beyond the Mist!

Over at the Sci Fi Catholic, D. G. D. Davidson has some very nice things to say about Sci Phi Journal, even making special mention of Beyond the Mist:

Ben Zwycky has a serial novel, called Beyond the Mist, set to conclude soon with the release of the seventh issue, which has an odd premise and a mystery element.  I’ve only just started it, but in its beginnings, at least, it reads like a science fictional Pilgrim’s Progress.  Though containing a few heavy-handed moments, it’s polished, and it’s intriguing.

to be singled out for praise alongside multiple Hugo-nominated authors Lou Antonelli and John C. Wright, not to mention be compared with a beloved classic, makes me do a happy dance. Beyond the Mist doesn’t conclude with the installment in Issue 7, though a major phase of the story is concluded there, there will be another three installments in all. After that, the story will continue in other books as soon as I can write them, hopefully I will be able to make some good progress on those by that time.

New Beyond The Mist Artwork and Sci Phi Issue 7 News!

Using my Evil McPersuadey patented Ultrasonic Mind-Control Ray and Ear Cleaner, I have convinced the ever awesome Cat Leonard to produce not one, but four new illustrations to accompany new instalments of Beyond the Mist in Sci Phi Journal. Here is the first illustration, that my wife immediately said she wanted on a T-shirt of her own:

The final proofreading phase of Issue 7 is now underway, and all should be ready in time for the issue’s release before the end of the month. In related news, as of Issue 7 I will be also listed as one of the editors, so can now proudly refer to myself as a contributing editor of Sci Phi Journal. Sounds good, doesn’t it?

Beyond the Mist First Draft Complete, Future Plans, and Beta Reader Request!

I am happy to announce that I’ve just written the ending of Beyond the Mist, aka book 1 in the Chara Series. There are a couple of gaps to fill in and and some inconsistencies to iron out, (and most likely cuts to make), but this is an important milestone, completion of the first draft. The next two books are both at the initial rough outline stage, and may grow into two parallel series set in the same universe that converge into one, we’ll see how work on those progresses as I finalise the remaining instalments for Sci Phi Journal. Both stories will grow out of things mentioned in chapter 12, so I will give more details on those once Issue 7 is out at the end of this month.

So far I have been writing Beyond the Mist without any beta readers, the first person to see each instalment has been Jason Rennie, Sci Phi Journal’s chief editor. I realise this is not the optimal solution, though it happens to have been working so far, so I’d like to ask for people to beta read and critique future instalments before I submit them, to help keep the quality up once the story world opens up. Beta reading will also commence after Issue 7 is out, and you will need to have been following the story so far to take part in that.
