Over at the Sci Fi Catholic, D. G. D. Davidson has some very nice things to say about Sci Phi Journal, even making special mention of Beyond the Mist:
Ben Zwycky has a serial novel, called Beyond the Mist, set to conclude soon with the release of the seventh issue, which has an odd premise and a mystery element. I’ve only just started it, but in its beginnings, at least, it reads like a science fictional Pilgrim’s Progress. Though containing a few heavy-handed moments, it’s polished, and it’s intriguing.
to be singled out for praise alongside multiple Hugo-nominated authors Lou Antonelli and John C. Wright, not to mention be compared with a beloved classic, makes me do a happy dance. Beyond the Mist doesn’t conclude with the installment in Issue 7, though a major phase of the story is concluded there, there will be another three installments in all. After that, the story will continue in other books as soon as I can write them, hopefully I will be able to make some good progress on those by that time.
There is going to be another superversiveSF roundtable livestream on Saturady at 3pm Eastern time, with guests Kate Paulk, Arlan Andrews and Daddy Warpig discussing among other things the recent Hugo kerfuffle and where we go from here.
Head over to http://superversivesf.com/ tomorrow for a link to the livestream itself.
Chapters 12 and 13 of Beyond the Mist, introducing the winning name from the contest and lots of other revelations, appear in Sci Phi Journal Issue 7
now availalable from amazon in kindle ebook format and in paperback.
The rest of the issue contains a lot of high-quality stories, including the start of a second serial by Michael F. Flynn
You can now also subscribe to Sci Phi Journal via patreon and get better prices on both kindle ebook, epub ebook and paperback issues of the journal, including back issues you may have missed. This cuts out the middleman, giving you a better price and the journal’s editor more income per sale, so it’s a win-win!
Using my Evil McPersuadey patented Ultrasonic Mind-Control Ray and Ear Cleaner, I have convinced the ever awesome Cat Leonard to produce not one, but four new illustrations to accompany new instalments of Beyond the Mist in Sci Phi Journal. Here is the first illustration, that my wife immediately said she wanted on a T-shirt of her own:
The final proofreading phase of Issue 7 is now underway, and all should be ready in time for the issue’s release before the end of the month. In related news, as of Issue 7 I will be also listed as one of the editors, so can now proudly refer to myself as a contributing editor of Sci Phi Journal. Sounds good, doesn’t it?
I am happy to announce that I’ve just written the ending of Beyond the Mist, aka book 1 in the Chara Series. There are a couple of gaps to fill in and and some inconsistencies to iron out, (and most likely cuts to make), but this is an important milestone, completion of the first draft. The next two books are both at the initial rough outline stage, and may grow into two parallel series set in the same universe that converge into one, we’ll see how work on those progresses as I finalise the remaining instalments for Sci Phi Journal. Both stories will grow out of things mentioned in chapter 12, so I will give more details on those once Issue 7 is out at the end of this month.
So far I have been writing Beyond the Mist without any beta readers, the first person to see each instalment has been Jason Rennie, Sci Phi Journal’s chief editor. I realise this is not the optimal solution, though it happens to have been working so far, so I’d like to ask for people to beta read and critique future instalments before I submit them, to help keep the quality up once the story world opens up. Beta reading will also commence after Issue 7 is out, and you will need to have been following the story so far to take part in that.
Anyone interested should get in contact with me either by private message on facebook, other forum that I frequent, or by replying below:
The above teaser of the cover art for issue 7 has been released, the signed copies of Nobility Among Us and Selected Verse: Faith and Family for the contest winner have been posted, and I have also submitted my first article to Sci Phi Journal, based on one of the lesser-read blog posts here. We’ll see if it gets accepted, and if so in which issue it will appear.
Issue 7 of Sci Phi Journal will contain chapters 12 and 13 of Beyond the Mist, in which the main character’s new name will be revealed (along with a lot of other things)
Also, tomorrow at 3pm Eastern time there will be another superversiveSF live stream, in which we will be discussing the merits of the various Hugo-nominated works, the day after voting on the awards closes. Many of these works can be read for free, links can be found at SFsignal:

The contest deadline expired 12 days ago, the winning name has been selected and incorporated into future installments (influencing what goes on in those instalments in various ways), and the winner, Joanne G. Watson, has been contacted so that the first of her prizes can be sent her way this week. Congratulations and thank you to Joanne, for the excellent name for Beyond the Mist’s protagonist. That name will be revealed in the next issue of Sci Phi Journal, due to come out in about a month from now.
We are heading into the final week of the Beyond the Mist Naming Contest. The discount on early issues of the Sci Phi Journal is over, and all the relevant issues for the contest are out, now is the time to make your choice. What kind of man is our protagonist?
