Little Squall

A distant roll of thunder announces the approaching turbulence;
Ominous gusts herald the nearing storm.
Large raindrops, as if in slow motion, fall past the window as doors and skylights are hurriedly secured.
The dry road outside turns speckled, then windswept spray wafts across the tarmac.
The air becomes diagonally striped, puddles appear and grow in seconds, alive with exploding impacts.
Lightning crackles all around, illuminating the darkened clouds.

Trees wave to and fro, helpless but resilient.

The rain eases to a gentle pattering hiss, almost serene, as children run for the cover of home.

Puddles overflow the kerb and spread across the grass, transforming into a temporary swamp.
Cars leave trails of ripples in their wake as drains silently ease the flood away.
The air smells fresh and earthy as the rolls of thunder grow more distant, reminders of the power of nature’s wrath.

The atmosphere’s mild anger is sated, the earth’s thirst slaked, the air refreshed and cleansed as the storm cloud drifts on to its next beneficiary.

Nobility Among Us Contest Winners

Congratulations to the book contest winners John Sparks and Roger de Laborde!

You should have been contacted by the publisher’s website by now with details on how to collect your book. Please let us know what you think of it.

My commiserations to all those who didn’t win, please follow this blog for updates on other special offers and events concerning the book, as well as for more of all the other stuff I go on about 🙂

Drained, and yet…

Another interrupted night
Another day half-zombified
Concentration all but gone;
Tempted to just drift along.

No will to attempt what needs doing,
Yet worth it for that heavenly viewing
Of little faces filled with glee,
As they bounce upon my knee.

Eyes full of wonder, taking in
An ordinary mundane thing.
Seen afresh its beauty glows
As they turn to the one who knows

And ask for confirmation
(And a simple explanation)
of this magical delight
that sets their world alight.

So please another sleepless week,
with head that aches and joints that creak,
If it means more of these joys,
From our little girl and boys.

The Joy of Mercy

Any good travelling public speaker (those who don’t just read from a script or teleprompter) will tell you that they will often give the same talk in various locations, wording key points slightly differently and emphasising different things according to the specific needs of the region, or even responding to the particular attitudes of the audience themselves. At the same time, those listening to a talk will remember certain details more than others as they summarise what they heard. Add to that particular themes that individual biographers may want to focus on and we can end up with several written versions of a given talk. Let’s look at one alternative version of one of the sayings quoted two entries ago:

Luke 6:37-39

37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Continue reading

Outside

Day after sunny spring day cooped up inside, worshipping a glowing screen.
I open the door to the garden, surprised by the smell of life.
Bathing in the vivid sun, I can but smile;
I feel the haggard lines under my eyes melt away in the soothing warmth.
How could I have been this stupid? All of this abundance just beyond my door.
I will not make that mistake again.

The Dawn

This saddest chore we will fulfill,
We women weak and weary still
From all these awful days have wrought,
We will ebalm him as we ought.

But who will roll the stone away, and what about the guard?
So many things combined to make this day so very hard.
There’s the rich man’s garden, but what happened to the tomb?
My friends nervously approach and peer into the gloom. Continue reading
